Overlooked Fire Safety Compliance Issue
When facility managers think about fire protection, they think about the big systems: sprinkler grids, fire pumps, and addressable alarm panels.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Because of this, the simplest and most vital life-safety devices in the building are entirely overlooked: emergency lights and exit signs. Failed emergency lighting is the single most common reason businesses fail routine fire safety inspections.
The 90-Minute Rule
According to NFPA 101, emergency illumination must be provided for a minimum of 1.5 hours (90 minutes) in the event of a total power failure.
In a true emergency — where the building is dark and smoke is reducing visibility — those illuminated signs are the only thing guiding your occupants to safety. If the batteries die after 15 minutes, people get trapped.
Why the “Push-to-Test” Button Lies to You
Most maintenance personnel perform their monthly check by pushing the test button, seeing the lights flare up, and checking the box.
This is a dangerous false positive. Pushing the button only proves the bulb works and that there is some charge in the battery. It does not prove the battery can sustain the light for 90 minutes. Over time, batteries degrade and lose their ability to hold a deep charge.
The Annual Load Test Requirement
To remain compliant, you must perform a full 90-minute load test annually. This requires disconnecting AC power and physically verifying that the lights remain illuminated for an hour and a half.
