Industrial Warehouse Safety

Industrial warehouses and logistics centers present massive fuel loads. Between stacked wooden pallets, cardboard packaging, and chemical solvents, a small spark can escalate into a four-alarm blaze in less than three minutes.

While sprinklers protect the building structure, fire extinguishers are the critical first line of defense. A properly placed extinguisher in the hands of a trained employee can stop a disaster before the alarm even sounds.

The Rules of Travel Distance

OSHA and NFPA 10 strictly regulate placement based on “travel distance” — the actual walking route an employee must take to reach the unit.

  • Class A Hazards (Ordinary Combustibles): Maximum travel distance cannot exceed 75 feet.
  • Class B Hazards (Flammable Liquids): Maximum travel distance is reduced to 50 feet.

If your facility layout changes — for example, new pallet racking forces employees to walk around an aisle — you instantly fall out of compliance.

Equipment is Useless Without Training

OSHA requires employers to provide educational training upon initial employment and at least annually thereafter. Employees must understand the P.A.S.S. method:

  • Pull the pin.
  • Aim low at the base of the fire.
  • Squeeze the lever.
  • Sweep from side to side.

Sessi’s Bulk Servicing for Massive Facilities

Managing annual tagging, 6-year tear-downs, and 12-year hydrostatic testing for hundreds of extinguishers is an administrative nightmare. Sessi Fire Protection utilizes barcode-driven digital asset tracking. We know exactly which extinguisher is due before we arrive on-site.
